Which Feedback Helps You Grow? How to Protect Your Confidence Without Closing Your Heart

Have you ever received feedback that completely crushed your confidence?

It’s meant to help…But instead, it leaves you doubting yourself.

Questioning your worth. Wondering if you even belong.

If you’ve been there, you’re not alone.

The truth is — not all feedback is created equal.

And part of growing is learning which voices deserve a microphone in your mind… and which ones don’t.

Hi, I’m Minami Yusui, and welcome to YU-project — where we turn self-doubt into self-trust so you can show up with confidence and joy.

When I first began pursuing my career seriously in New York, there was a well-known figure in the Broadway world whose opinion everyone cared about.

I cared about it, too.

And the feedback I received from that person made me feel like my English had to be perfect.

That my performance had to be flawless.

That unless I was better… Broadway would never happen for me.

Because English isn’t my first language, I didn’t just receive that feedback as guidance.

I received it as a verdict.

You’re not enough.

For a while, I absorbed every comment as truth.

I still work on my English every single day. That hasn’t changed.

What did change…was discernment.

Now, I don’t just listen to feedback with my ears.

I listen with my body.

When feedback helps me grow, I feel open. Curious. Energized.

But when feedback makes my shoulders tighten…My breath shortens…My confidence shrinks…

I pause.

Because the moment feedback starts closing your body, it’s no longer helping your growth —It’s hurting your spirit.

Protecting your heart isn’t weakness.

It’s strength.

Instead of chasing one person’s approval, I found mentors, teachers, and communities that reminded me…

I wasn’t behind. I wasn’t broken. I was becoming.

And that changed everything.

Growth doesn’t mean absorbing every opinion that comes your way.

It means learning to filter.

You can be open to correction and protect your confidence at the same time.

That balance is wisdom.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this feedback make me expand?

  • Does it invite growth with joy?

  • Or does it make me shrink, freeze, and disappear?

Your body already knows the answer.

If you’ve been trying to please every critic…Chasing an impossible standard…Or reshaping yourself to fit someone else’s idea of success…

Pause.

And ask:

Does this feedback help me rise? Or does it make me fade?

Choose the voice that fuels your heart.

You are not here to be perfect.

You are here to be alive.

And remember —No matter how limited today may feel, how your life unfolds is Unlimited.

You are Unlimited.
