What Is Presence (And Why It Changes Everything)

Have you ever met someone and felt something immediately—before they even said a word?
It’s subtle. But unmistakable.
You feel their attention. Their energy. Their presence.
For a long time, I thought presence was something you developed by becoming more confident, more expressive, or more charismatic.
But what I’ve come to understand is much simpler:
Presence is not something you add. It’s something you return to.
What Is Presence, Really?
When people ask what is presence, they often imagine confidence on the surface—strong voice, polished delivery, or charisma.
But presence isn’t about being loud. It’s not about performing confidence.
Presence is your ability to be fully here—with yourself and with others.
Because before people hear your words, they feel you.
They feel your attention. They feel your energy.
And that feeling shapes everything.
Why Presence Changes Everything
One of the most important realizations is this:
Your energy becomes your reputation.
People may not remember exactly what you said—but they remember how they felt around you.
You’ve likely experienced this:
Someone who made you feel calm
Someone who made you feel seen
Someone who felt tense or disconnected
That’s presence.
And it influences every interaction—whether you’re aware of it or not.
What Gets in the Way of Presence
Presence is not something you need to build from scratch.
It’s already there.
But it gets covered when:
You’re thinking ahead
You’re trying to perform
You’re trying to prove something
The moment your attention moves into your head—planning what to say next—you leave the moment.
And the connection disappears.
The Shift: From Words to Awareness
Instead of asking: “What should I say?”
Try asking:
How am I showing up right now?
Am I present?
Am I grounded?
Am I actually listening?
Presence is not a performance.
It’s a state.
And the more you return to it, the more people feel you.

A Simple Way to Practice Presence
You don’t need to change everything at once.
Start small.
Pause.
Notice your body.
Bring your attention back to the moment.
Then listen—not to respond, but to receive.
Even this small shift can change how you’re experienced.
And remember, some days may feel limited—but how your life unfolds is shaped by how you show up.
