The leader I trust most didn’t try to be impressive.
She was open.
When we talk about vulnerability in leadership, many people imagine oversharing, emotional outbursts, or a loss of authority. That’s not what I mean.
For me, vulnerability in leadership is something quieter—and far more powerful. It is the willingness to be human without apology. And that humanity is what builds trust.
The Leader Who Changed My Perspective
There is a Broadway legend I deeply respect—a Tony Award-winning director, choreographer, and performer. Her accomplishments are extraordinary.
But what stayed with me most was not her résumé. It was her openness.
She would say, very simply, “English is not my first language.”
She didn’t say it apologetically. She didn’t diminish herself. She stated it as fact.
Watching someone who didn’t grow up speaking English create remarkable work in this industry—and own that truth so naturally—gave me profound relief.
As someone who grew up in Japan, English is not my first language either.
Seeing her model that level of openness reshaped how I understood vulnerability in leadership.
What Vulnerability in Leadership Is — and Isn’t
When I speak about vulnerability in leadership, I don’t mean sharing everything.
It is not about losing boundaries. It is not about lowering standards. It is not about seeking sympathy.
Vulnerability in leadership is about clarity.
It is saying:
This is who I am.
This is where I’m coming from.
This is what I’m here to do.
She didn’t lower the standard of excellence. She demonstrated what was possible without hiding parts of herself.
That distinction changed everything for me.

Why Vulnerability Builds Trust in Leadership
People don’t trust leaders because they are perfect.
They trust leaders because they are human.
When a leader is open about who they are, they create psychological safety.
They signal what is allowed. They model authenticity.
Vulnerability builds trust in leadership because it removes the pressure to perform perfection.
It creates space for others to contribute honestly, speak up, and take risks.
Being human doesn’t weaken authority. It strengthens it.
A Reflection for Your Own Leadership
If you became slightly more open in one area of your leadership, where would that make things easier for the people around you?
You don’t need to act on it immediately. Just notice it.
